So I'm quite over weight (20kgs over) I am lacking motivation big time!
I know how I want to be, what I want to look like, what I should eat, what exercising I should be doing etc. But for some reason I just dont,
I know I should have some fruit and go walk the dog, but instead I have toast and plonk on the couch :( afterwards I feel disgusting and hate myself cause I just dont do it!
I am in the process of quitting smoking so I know I must have some sort of will power! but I am a fussy eater (if I dont like the texture of something ill dry-reach and or throw up) so that make its hard to eat healthy, especially when i don't even have money to go the the gym :(
Can someone please help me and tell me what the hell is wrong with me???
I cant be the only person in the world like this!!!

I would team up with a good friend for motivation to go for a daily walk or swim. Believe it or not it is possible to get a sweat up in a heated pool doing aqua aerobics. If you have a dog take it for a walk daily or 3 smaller walks. Plus a workout partner can motivate you with good eating habits. We don't buy sweet foods or soft drinks so there is no temptation in the house.

Hi Greta, I would say try finding the reason why do you want to lose weight, look better or change your life pattern, then you will be so motivated and pumped to make changes in your life. Finding fitspo pictures on Tumblr and stick them on your wall or set it as your phone wallpaper helps too!

Greta Nothing Is Wrong With You.
I am a slight bit overweight at the moment, however, have maintained a reasonably active lifestyle most of my adult life. I am constantly lacking motivation. I constantly want to eat that whole block of chocolate, but its is a mind game you play with yourself. Everyone is different when it comes to weight loss, for me I find that if I get out and exercise, my eating slowly improves as i don't crave the bad stuff as much.

The big thing is, you don't need a gym!

Its amazing what you can do from home. The easiest one is a power walk around your suburb. The mind game here is that one, getting out to do it, and two thinking about what other people may think. The getting out to do it is made so much easier by just having to walk out your door. Think of a route before hand, like going to the local park walking around it and coming back. Thinking about what others may think, you just have to put that out of your brain, if they are not exercising they are most likely thinking, 'I should be doing that'. If they are exercising they are usually so caught up in their own mind or only have positive thoughts about you. Remember a lot of these 'fit people' weren't so fit at one stage in life.

Also note a power-walk should be pushing yourself. Your breathing (in through nose out through mouth) should be quick. Its about getting your heart rate up. I don't believe in going straight to jogging, its far to much pressure on your muscles and joints, which can quickly lead to injury. Also remember to stretch (google for the right technique) as you will hurt at the next walk.

A simple 45-60 min walk a day to every second day over a 4-6km distance will aid in your health stats (6km/hr is a great rate to be at, but 3-4km/hr is a great starting point), but also get the weight to fall off. Think about it, its only two episodes of TV.

Good Luck!

Hi Greta

Need to stay focussd and think of the positives you are achieving ,like quitting smoking.
I too used to smoke and have toast and plonk on the lounge.
Giving up smoking is the start to a new lifestyle change
I weigh 107kg,now I weigh 78kg ,through hard work overtime ,to you can achieve your goals,
Ther eis nothing wrong with you ,probably craving for nicotine at this stage.
The 24 hour gyms are great and cheap and slowly will be be motivated,

Hi there don't give up it's not out of reach. I am a genuine kung fu master with 35 years of training and 22 years of those as a teacher. Have some formal training in fitness and health. Most importantly I have lost 23kg and kept it off for many years. I am back to being myself.

Firstly your struggle is within yourself. You dont know why you can't get motivated. It's because perhaps you feel you won't get there, that you will fail. If that's the case then you are like anyone else who faces a challenge. That's all normal.

You have to be clear in your mind when it comes to setting goals. Acting on emotions is not always going to give you long term results. Just as importantly be prepared for some pain and discomfort. There is no such thing as EASY exercises.

When you eat, how often you eat, portions all make a huge difference.
Nothing burns fat like muscle gain. So walking alone isn't enough. Sleeping habits, stress, environment all affect our health.

Find a teacher or trainer who is skilled in interval training, this will work best.
One thing at a time, hence your first step is to reach out and ask for help.
20kg is not that hard a goal to achieve with the right knowledge and attitude.

As you develop muscle you will burn fat and gain more energy and confidence. Go for it!

Hi Greta, I'm trying to lose my over weight about 8kgs but it feel really hard for me too. I have been eating healthier, doing exercise several times a week. Yet still have no result. You are not alone.

But I have motivation after read Ninna and Benno stories, even if I don't see the result now, maybe I can see it someday later. Do it healthy, it's a long term project.

Find others that have same goal as you and do it together, if you can go to gym, just do some exercise at home or walk around 30-45 minutes everyday. Make your own meal instead of eating out so you can control calories intake (it's economical too), just drink plain water.

It's better if you dont consume any meals 2 hours before sleep.

Let's strive together.

Hi Greta,

Myself and my partner both have gone through a life changing lifestyle change.
Between us we have lost over 65 kg.

Eating healthy is very easy, you just need to make sure that its clean low fat high protein foods.

As long as your intake is lower than the quantity your body uses then you will naturally lose weight. IF you can keep to an 1700 calorie intake you should lose about 1kg a week!

Simple portion sizing. 110g of steak or 200g of fish/chicken
100g broccoli, 250g pumpkin.

That is the mix for weight loss (Lunch and dinner)
Breakfast, 2 x pieces of rye toast or 30g of oats with water (or light milk if unnecessary) .

Once the weight is gone you need to seriously think about your lifestyle and exercise. 2-3 times a week for 30-45 minutes and you will be fit, toned and ready for anything!

Losing weight plus giving up smoking, prob not a good idfea to be doing both. I succesfully have up smoking in 2005 which was really hard but worth it. It is harder to lose weight & we don't want to go to the gym or be seen in workout gear drenched in perspiration.
I have hit 126kgs & my ideal weight is 68kgs so I am almost double what I should be. It started 15 years ago when I had a serious head injury & was unable to be active for 12 months. That injury also damaged the pituitary gland at the base of my skull so I had undiagnosed hypothyroidism for a number of years which just added weight regardless of exercise.
My weight stablised around 100kgs for many years until Jan 2012 when I contracted a nasty dose of a European flu from my son who had just returned from there. The flu continued to give me problems for months & was pretty much stuck in bed. I also had an accident at the same time which left me with a broken shoulder so exercise was non existant during 2012, now I am struggling with the extra 58kgs that I should not be carrying around. Finding a way to lose it is very hard due to constant pain with arthritis & fibromyalgia & now I find I am seriously depressed. I don't want to go out because of the body image plus it hurts to walk far with so much weight. I am seeing my GP this week to discuss my care plan so will talk to him & get a referral to a dietian as well as a psyciatrist. I have to address my depression as I comfort eat & if I can overcome that I will be able to lose weight.
My plan is to have my meds adjusted to help my depression as well as the pain & dicuss with a dietian what options are available, do I go with the meal replacement drinks which do work in the beginning but long term they won't. Weight loss should be done slowly so it stays off otherwise we get discouraged. Don't trust yr scales to tell you that you have lost weight, use a measuring tape & write down yr thigh, hip & stomach measurements then compare those each week. Weight loss in the beginning is hard to work out as much of it will be fat turning into muscle & muscle weighs more than fat. I am going to start exercising in a heated pool so I can strengthen my leg muscles, water makes you weightless & so much easier to exercise. You might find the local pool has a form of water exercise including like minded people with the same goal.
Find others in yr area that want to lose weight, check with yr community centres as there will be groups of people looking for exercise partners. These are going to be people you don't know & less likely to judge you because they are in the same situation. Check with the local gyms to see if they have seperate exercise areas for females, I am female & would hate to exercise with men in the room. If you have the support of people who are also overweight & want to lose it then you are more likely to stick to it. Find as many people as you need to for the support & tell them you want to lose weight & would they encourage you to do that. I used that technique when giving up smoking, I told everyone I was quitting so each time I was tempted the guilt would kick in so I didn't light one up. I also treated the urge to smoke as a person talking to me so each time I felt the urge I would say "no I don't need it" to the little voice saying you are stressed & need a cigarette. I know it sounds weird but it worked for me lol.
Don't do it on yr own because it increases your chances of failing, there are a lot of other people out there who feel the same as you so start looking for them so you have moral support.

what i find even if you dont want to go to the gym is before bed have water atlest 1 litre of water because water will help you lose weight and by the sounds of it you like being at home alot so maybe buy a set of dumb bells and do some planking and push ups and maybe go for alittle jog atlest try and do some cardio then after all that do some weights not to much but if you do cardio and then some weights youll lose more weight sitting down on the couch.

How are things going for you now Greta?
Have you been able to get out of the house and into your backyard or out in the neighbourhood for a walk?
If you have a dog, try to take it for a walk most days of the week to start with and then as you start to feel fitter, make those walks longer or walk a bit faster.
I know what it is like to live on a tight budget. Junk food can seem to be cheaper at times compared to fruit and veg, etc but when you think about it, that family sized block of chocolate or large bag of chips may only be $2-3 (on special), but they are usually also only about 200g in weight. Look in the fruit and veg section and you will find lots of lovely fruits and vegies for $1.50-$4 PER KILO which actually works out much cheaper, plus much healthier.
Try a small handful of nuts as a snack, lots of vegies, as well as some smaller amounts of lean meat and grains to keep your body going.

I KNOW you can overcome this hurdle of doubting yourself, i hope that you have been strong enough to stay away from the cigarettes (your body will thank you for it).
Good luck with everything. :)

Greta you don't need to go to the gym. All you need to do is to go out for a walk. If you can walk around your neighborhood, that would be great. If you can't walk round your yard. Walking will help you overcome your feeling of lethargy. Find out if their is a walking group near you and join up. You don't have to be especially athletic, and you'll meet other people which will also help you feel motivated.
Also try taking a multivitamin every day. This may be what you need to help you feel more energetic.

I go to the gym every morning at 6.00am. Please believe me - I don't bound out of bed with excitement - I have to make myself get up, get dressed and head off.
Its tough at first but take one day at a time. If you manage to get some excercise in one day but cant face it the next day don't let that stop you getting up the third day.
You dont have to go to the gym - find a park near by, use a DVD at home - anything to get yourself moving.
You will feel better about yourself which will stop the Hating Yourself thoughts.
You are worth putting the effort in. You deserve to feel better about yourself.
My thoughts and best wishes go out to you.

I really feel for you. I was in exactly the same situation 18 months ago. I now weigh 20kg less and feel better than I ever have in my life. And I will stay this way for the rest of my life as nothing feels better than healthy. I just wish I knew what I now know 15 years ago!
I highly recommed you visit the following life-changing websites (and reading the books) regarding diet and lifestyle...what society classes as "healthy" food isn't necessarily what you should be eating....

Hi Greta, My name is Milly. I was 20 kg over weight after my second child, plus I had PMDepression from my first so that didn't add to my weight problems.
I lost my weight and I am now 62 kgs. My advise in which did it for me is to EAT 3 healthy meals a day. I thought I would never lose it but I did:
GOOD LUCK>

I have lost 35kg from the time my partner walked out on me until now. It took a really life-changing event like that to "shake me" out of my torpor where I had given up and couldn't be bothered, to actually getting up off the couch and making a conscious decision to change not just what I was eating, but my whole lifestyle.

If you don't want to waste one more hour or one more day of your life being unhappy, then commit to making yourself uncomfortable - because it's only when your body is uncomfortable (hungry/tired/craving) that real change occurs.

Hi
I understand your dilemma, having lost and regained the same 10kg many times over the years. It's easy to live in your emotions and to listen to your own negative self talk. I guess the only solution is to make very small goals, and small rewards. Gyms are expensive, but you could make a bargain with yourself. Eg. Today I will walk for 30 minutes and will reward myself with watching my favorite tv show with a cuppa. Also, I have found making a time with a friend to walk makes it easier and you feel more motivated. Also, the time flies because you are chatting. Just go day by day, each day write down your achievements. Good on you deciding to quit smoking, that is a great thing to do and I did after multiple tries and now am happy at the money I saved and the improvement to my health. Good luck, and no, you are NOT the only person in the world like this :-)

I feel for you Greta, you are not alone. I have lost 18kgs so far, but now have hit a wall with a bad injury and now depression has sunk in, what I have done though is maintained the 18kg weightloss, so I am staying positive with that. I used to love getting on my treadmill everyday and improving my stats on it each week, but its hard to change your mindset and you do fight with yourself everyday to stop going back to bad habits. There is a great site that I used called Weightitup, I lost all my weight at home, no gym, give youself small goals, change one thing you do or eat a day. It will be hard at first and remember it is not going to happen overnight. Stick at it, I know you can do it.
