My dog scruffy is a shih tzu/maltese and is a very intelligent little thing, in fact he is quite scary at times with what he knows lol. BUT.... he will NOT tolerate anyone else going near us. He is 4 1/2 years old and if anyone comes near us, he WILL bite them if we dont restrain him. The vet said that he is being overprotective of us and is really obsessive over us! Okay, thats good that he loves us so much, but it is so annoying! If anyone comes we either have to shut him outside, or in another room, or he sits on our lap with us holding onto his collar, or if the visitor moves, he will grab him! Maybe because we have treated him as part of the family ( just my hubby and me here), and like a human!

Hi Scruffy, I know what you are talking about. I bought a male Maltese some years ago, like yours he was so protective of the owners that he bit me after he came to live at my place. He had to go back to the owner. They were selling him because he bit people who came to visit, and since they had 2 small children, were frightened that they would be bitten. Guess they would have to build a kennel and yard outside. Bigger dogs can wear a wire muzzle for training, but littlies are problem.

Hi Simla, well its nice to know that he isn't the only dog that does that. If someone comes, then we just shut himoutside, or inside or in another room. Or we just hold him. We have signs up everywhere saying "beware of the dog", so if anyone decides to trespass on our property, they are in trouble. Since Scruffy is 4 1/2, he is too old to train now. I am just glad that we don't get too many visitors.

My dog is also very overprotective!! although she is an american staffy, I have to lock her out the back when people visit, unless she know them.
She barks at anything and everything and does not let anyone near me.
She is quite a big dog so I dont give her the chance to do anything wrong when other people are involved BUT she has given me the upper hand!
because she loves me so so so much and is in-fact so overprotective, i can train her very well, with the whole just want to please me thing! its fantastic as I have managed to get her to do anything!
apart from other people and other dogs she is fantastic!
you should try focus on using her love to make her very well behaved and then slowly work on the biting thing!

When i was growing up me neighbour had a shihtzu and he always use to bite my feet, even after a couple of years! i hated it.

Yes I have asked the vets and they say its because he loves us so much, that he doesn"t want ayone near us. We have "beware of the dog" signs up all over the place, so that people know not to just walk in the back gate.
Its something that we just have to put up with. BUT, saying that, when he goes to be groomed, he is as good as gold with her, same as the vets. They are the only ones who can go near him besides us. MALES ! lol Scruffy only goes to the vets once a year to get all his shots etc, and the groomer about twice a year as I do him myself in between.

Hi Greta, I wouldn't chance training him. One day I had a friend come in and I had him in my arms and she was feeding him schmackos , she asked me three times to put him on the floor as they were being friends! On the fourth time, I told her it was her fault if she got bitten. I put him on the floor and he went straight for her leg and bit her causing a bruise and teeth marks. She admitted then that I was right.
