Anyone with ideas on what to do with green tomatoes. Plants recently came up in garden and producing dozens of green tomatoes. Was hoping they would ripen up before the cold wheather sets in but they have'nt. Tried ripening them on window sill, placed in paper bag with a ripe apple, but nothing seems to be working. It seems a waste to throw them away and plants are producing more every day.

I put mine on the warm kitchen windowsill, where they get a lot of sunlight and they usually ripen. I've also been advised to bring in the whole plant and put it somewhere warm and sunny.

I just recently planted a whole heap of different tomato's one of which was a green tomato. They are a heirloom tomato called Green Zebra Tomato, they have great productivity and taste. It says they add great flavour and sensation to summer salads which would suggest that they could also be used in sandwiches etc, not sure if they would be the same but there are green tomato around if all else fails make chutney or jam.

When we had green tomatoes back in the UK we would wrap them in new paper and put them in a draw and they would keep for 6 weeks or more.

If ever you get any place them in a light spot inside with a ripe banana and they will ripen quickly - they won't be dark red but the taste will be ok

Yes green tomato relish (if you don't have Grandma's recipe, google it). I believe it is warmth rather than sunlight that ripens them

what i do with green tomatoes are, i put on the kitchen bench and they will ripen naturally , some old way was to put in paper bags and they would ripen also. mostly what can be done with them though is to make green chutney, always nice. I sometimes wish i could see green tomatoes in the fruit shops or supermarkets as they are mostly red and dont have much life after that.... all the best with it anyway

I remember as I grew up, we always had green tomatoes at the end of the season. Mum taught us to wrap them in newspaper, then we placed them in the linen cupboard next to the hot water cylinder (I guess any warm dark cupboard would work). Without fail the tomatoes would ripen perfectly, we just had to remember to check every few days so they didn't rot.

Green tomato relish was a favourite at our table! Grandma's recipe was best, hopefully somebody can pass it on. Sadly, I lost my old recipe book in moving house! Good luck!

Keep in a cool dark place for at least a week before opening to allow the flavours to develop. Keep the chutney in the fridge once opened.
