What does the word HERO mean to you? To me it is a neighbour that goes next door everyday to check on an elderly person not knowing what they may find. Someone going to work in terrible conditions because they feel they are going to make a difference. Getting out of bed when you have just lost everything - family.
Wouldn't it be lovely to just acknowledge people we know that do amazing and outstanding things - which may seem little or insignificant to some but the world to others.

As a general rule, I would not use the work with sportspeople, entertainers, etc.
Military and similar in some cases, lifesavers, ambos, etc....

Guitar Hero - no chance. Nothing heroic about playing guitar. Not even legendary.

Back in the early 1990's I helped stop an armed robbery of a jewelery store. Took the shotgun off the robber. Probably makes me stupid, but not a hero.

My true hero's are people who put their lives on the line to help and save others, people and animals. All those volunteers who help those out of acts of kindness and don't get paid for there services.Gaurdian angels from all kinds of walk of life True hero's!

Wow i totally agree. It is so nice that someone feels the same way. I liked that show Random Acts of Kindness - it made me tear up a few times :p I think the true heroes don't look for recognition, they don't parade it they just power on.

My true heroes are who are volunteers in any field as they are really helping hands without any greed and without any requirement they provide help in different various needed forms. Salute to them.

I agree with Mandymoo - the word hero is way over used and applied to everyone from sports stars to musicians. Come on, heroes? Hardly. Heroes are people who disregard their own safety and put their lives on the line to save or help others. Sports stars, supermodels & music stars are just that .... stars in their fields. Lets be realistic.

I think the term hero is an overly used word in todays society. You can be a sports person and be a hero. I think the real heroes in our society are those who put their lives on the lines for others.

I completely agree with you Mandymoo... the term is so overused it has almost lost its true meaning. A hero is one who does a courageous act for the benefit of another.

Hero - a good word which has so many meanings. A football hero - a singing hero - a hero at war - or a hero at home - we all think of a hero in different ways. Perhaps the best hero of all is my father. I looked up to him all is life and afterwards I still remember what he taught me - right from wrong, respect to others and much, much more. I know of people who are suffering but quietly so to someone outside they would never know. They too are heroes. A four-letter word, but so many meanings.

I totally agree. In NSW alone, there are 70,000 heroes who are volunteer firefighters who turn out every time a catastrophe looms, at considerable hazard to themselves. Where would the state be without them?
