Try and find where the main ant mound is. Usually you can follow the ants. Then boil a kettle and pour it down the hole. You have to work pretty fast to get the queen.

There are a few natural remedies, how good they work varies but we used cloves, sprinkle them around and it helped, they would walk in a line over the paving but they are gone now

Hi Dens, one of the things I use to stop ants from eating my strawberries is to have a bowl of water or a tub of water around the plants.

I have a bunch of strawberry plants in containers that I was thinking of putting in the ground. Just changed my mind. At least I can put the containers and stands in water to stop the ants. Anyway, we have a lovely bluetongue lizard under our shed, and they love strawberries. He cant reach them at the moment! I have had to bird net them though. What I dont understand is why I'm still getting strawberries setting in late May in SA - isnt it a bit late?

The only solution I have found to work is talcum power, but not baby powder. I dont know why, maybe its the purfume, nivea talk seems to work well. I follow the ants back to the nest and put a good dose around the entrance. They dont cross the talc line and end up digginng their way out and relocating. My mum pours the talc dokwn the ants nest which kills them. Depends what outcomeyou ppreferas to how you use the talc.

I have used baby powder outside along the foundations, on walls, across doorsteps and in grooves in cement.(in dry weather). Inside we have used in a multitude of places, even down their holes.
You have to be very careful with poisons. Some release strong fumes.
Some are toxic to humans and pets on contact. Pets and birds may try to eat something that contaminated ants or other insects have been on. Small children have a tendency to explore and touch things they shouldn't, or they may simply sit, crawl, or walk on something which may or may not be visible....Just a suggestion, if you do have to use poisons find a way of covering/shielding it with something that children cannot move or put their fingers through, and pets can't get to if need be.

I caught the Lizards eating my strawberries!!

The ants are coming from somewhere probably not to far away; try following their trail & then disturb their nest & place the ant powder within it and along the trails to your strawberries. If you are able to find the queen ants and relocate her even if dead this may also help redirect the ants to another area away from your patch - preferably away from the house to :).

Liquid ant works best for us.

Hi there. I agree with the ant sand solution, it works great for me. Just be mindful of any pets you have in your household. My cats are fine, but my dog is a big dopey and will try anything. Perhaps transfer your strawberries to a hanging pot?

We join onto bushland where we live & ants are such a problem. For outside I mix 10 mls per Lt of Solfac Pro which you can buy from Westfarmers or similar & spray. Lasts upto 3 months. Also good for spiders.

Another thing I've tried is Vaseline around the top of fence post/gates & that really works for months & months.

Inside the house recently we had a dreadful plague, so bought some Ant-rid baits which I put on window-sills & they also last for 3 months & really do work.

Cheers,

Krys

I just use snail bait or drop them into a bucket of salt water which really works quickly.

They are layered really thick on top of each other on fence posts on paddocks that are several km. long at farms down in the Murraylands and South East areas of SA.. The baits would have to be literally poured into the gaps in them. They have very hard shells. You can't kill them by treading on them. They just sink into the ground. There is sheep in the paddocks and they have dogs which help round up and move the sheep between paddocks.

Hi, I had the same problem with ant and found that when I put powder around my strawberry bed, just plain talcum powder they do not like it on their feet as it interferes with their recepters. Alternitively buy some strike powder from your hardware and put that around your bed they will walk in this take it back to the nest and kill everything down there.

Good luck

You could try buying ant sand and just sprinkling it around the plants you are most worried about. You could also try the little stick on things that have poison in them and the ants will take it back to the colony. Often ants are a sign that you have other pest problems and the ants are just farming the other insects for the honeydew they produce. so have a look around and see if you can see any aphids or anything. Good Luck!

I had the same problem in another area i lived in ants were in the dirt everywhere i never solved it now i have moved and have massive snail problems has anyone got any ideas rather than snail...

I have trouble with snails and slugs too. My brother fixed the problem by letting the chooks into the garden in the winter they love the slugs but the snails need squashing first. I also put pine needles around the strawberry bed and that helped a bit.
