Why are so many people afraid of pet snakes

I have a murry darling python and he is very friendy , he hasn't bitten me and I have raised him since he was no bigger than a bangle, yet some of my friends are so afraid they won't even enter the room , let alone touch him : Why is this?

we don't have snakes where i live the only ones you watch out for are trouser snakes

LoL heartrob gotta say that type of anke runs rampant all over the world and are not to be feared just cautious of...however it was a serious comment I was making and I am still curious as to why people fear them as much as they do
