Do you have Rugby World Cup fever?

Are there women out there who can't get enough of the rugby and turn up to each event or viewing with a passion and eagerness instilled in their hearts? Perhaps you are a man who isn't interested in the rugby at all, but through fear of criticism, feigns interest in the hope of fooling your male comrades, thus protecting your masculinity? Are those Caféstudy members residing in NZ pleased with the tourism and publicity it's creating? Are the Aussies or Kiwi's going to win? Oh so many questions!

Well.........yes I am an avid rugby follower, especially when the All Blacks are playing!!! Was such a nail-biting final last night,I was on the edge of my seat screaming at the television LOL.
A big congratulations go out to the All Blacks for winning the World Cup last night and also to the Silver Ferns for beating Aussie as well..WELL DONE TO YOU ALL.

I am a rugby fan - but only when the All Blacks are playing. I have watched a number of the pool games in the Rugby World Cup which teams other than the All Blacks were playing.
The AB's will win on Sunday night

Don't know about scaring the bejesus out of the Wallies but it sure feels good to be a Kiwi living in Australia right now. The AB's ate wallaby for dinner the other night now they're going to follow up with frogs legs. On ya boys, do the haka for the Kiwis everywhere except NZ.

While I am a New Zealander I will be utterly disappointed if France win the Rigby World Cup.. Not that the All Blacks are my 'home team' but France have played through this series like a regional team, to be nice to them. more like a club team. They have not played like a world class team at all and how they ever got there I do not know. Whatever. I will be so glad when it is all over, 9 weeks of rugby on top of what we have had in the season which started back in April or whenever is just too much. When will the Rugby Union realise the reason people are losing interest in the game.

I am mildly interested - more in keeping track of the status of the teams than in watching actual matches, 'though I can be persuaded to join my husband in front of the t.v. on occasion. I did watch the Tri-Nations decider with a group of friends recently. Personally I think Ireland has a good chance in the RWC and deserve to take it out - they could do with some good news !

Now, if you want to talk about cricket on the other hand ...... (◕‿◕✿)

I don't particularly like any team sports because I really do not understand the rules. I wrote about this on another forum recently and I believe it stems from you childhood. If your family didn't "go/do" such games then your interests lie elsewhere.

I'm tired of all the problems in Auckland where we are currently the main venue for the games...the transport woes, the weather, the masses and so on.

Although of course, I have to look to the side of $$ which I can see many businesses especially the ones I see mostly, are packed. No chairs available at some popular cafes as people imbibe and so forth...

Will Auckland be a ghost town (excuse the pun) when it is finished. No, not really all the locals that are here will return to their regular haunts and stuff like that...

Trudy, you need two TV's in the house. My partner is not into Rugby, nor am I, but he is into football. I am more than happy for him to do his thing when it comes to football, and I select something else to watch if I am wanting to watch TV at the same time. I keep tab on the scores with him during coffee breaks etc. We are both happy.

Sounds like the perfect compromise to me Barb!! Thanks for the tip :)

So much of life is about compromise. A fine line between compromise and giving in!!. Winning the point does not necessarily mean winning the war. Stress levels are kept at a low for all concerned if you don't feel that it has to be your way all the time. Let's face it, in this instance, a second TV is very affordable these days. That is of course if you don't feel that you have to buy the biggest and most expensive one on the market. (Just a second TV will do the job).

I used to be really into rugby as a teenager - well the rugby players anyway! lol
I didn't think I would be that interested especially since we here in Christchurch lost all our games. Sometimes it feels like the RWC is in a another country. However I have to admit I'm getting caught up in the excitement and hope this is going to be the year the All Blacks clinch the trophy. Go the Mighty AB's :)

I DEFINITELY have rugby world cup fever!
I am not really a rugby fan, but who can resist the excitement of this tournament - on our home turf, too!!!!
It is fantastic to see how everyone (well, nearly everyone!) is getting involved in it. I love to see all the flags on cars, the people wearing the colours of the country that they are supporting, stick on tattoos and body paint.
I was at the South Africa/Namibia match last night and the passion and enthusiasm of the crowd, whoever they were supporting, was electric.
As to who is going to win - the All Blacks of course! How could we even think that some other team might!!!
Go the men in black!

No I am not a Rugby fan. I do not like the way they traumatise their bodies (being a nurse)I believe we should healthily care for our bodies. Also socially I believe a lot of these men think they are almost Gods and get away with too much bad behaviour.Neither is my husband I am lucky to say. We will both occassionally watch a world premiere and enjoy it for its sport but I think our world has gone quite mad with the way these sportstars, moviestars and CEO's are paid. People who save lives are paid far less than these people and a lot of them, sportsmen are very poor role models.

My fever is at best luke warm. As a world cup event it lacks the real intensity the name implies. Having every country who wants to compete competing dilutes the quality and intensity to the ho hum level except for the games between the competitive teams. I will watch a very select number of games until we get down to the sharp end of the competition. As a game Rugby Union is highly technical, a great spectacle when played at the highest level and certainly is worth a watch regardless of your code allegiances. I am an NRL fan first and foremost but I accept that the world can accommodate Rugby Union, AFL, Soccer, hurling and marbles to name but a few other codes. A broad outlook on life, the universe and the concept of competition is needed to grasp the notion that there is more that one set of rules for a game that worthy of merit. Dogmatic singularity of definition of what is good, acceptable and valid in a code of sport lacks credibility in contemporary life.

During the preliminary rounds apart from when Australia plays the World Cup lacks interest for me. The early lopsided results makes it a long and tedious six weeks. The quarter finals will improve that factor, but Rugby as an entertainment package has lost its appeal, quite boring overall, and I generally love my sports.

I am sick and tired of the RWC - its disrupted my childrens secondary education and had a major effect on my other daugter trying to earn money for university next year. If we put so much time and energy into the longer lasting things that will bring long term benefits to the country it would be better.

Normally I would have to say that I hate rugby... BUT... I was in Auckland city on opening night and watched the amazing fireworks display from a penthouse beneath the sky tower... what a spectacular display! Anyway I also watched the game and alongside my fellow all black supporters I jumped up with excitement when those fantastic passes were made which eventuated in a try, and when mistakes were made I too groaned in dissapointment. I really enjoyed the game. Walking down the street I count the numbers of flags everywhere and its awesome... so many people out there supporting the same thing, its great to see the sense of national pride. Another thing that it great to see is the celebration of our multi cultured society... there are more cars with a samoan/NZ combination or wales/NZ, figi/samoa/nz, and so many other that display hoe we as new zealanders identify as an array of ethnicities. I dont really know what the impact of the RWC is having on local business, but im sure that the bars are raking in the cash. I am going to side with my son concerning who is going to win... he says south africa (he loves them so much that he has asked me to crochet him a south african flag blanket, he's 9) so south africa it is.

Joanie
  • 23rd Sep 2011 12:34am

I normally hate Rugby (I'm an AFL tragic) but I must admit I've sneaked a few games on Foxtel when Australia or New Zealand are playing. My son has a bet going (cost $100) for Franklin to win Coleman,Judd to win Brownlow,Storm to win Rugby,Hawthorn to make Grand Final & New Zealnd to win World Cup.He wins $10.000 if it comes off,so that's another reason to watch the Rugby.

ab
  • 23rd Sep 2011 12:26am

I'm a guy and I wont feign interest in anything. I don't have any interest in any of the footy codes; the only good thing about them are the cheerleaders. :) But sadly, they're not even a good enough reason for me to watch the game.

On self examination I can say that while I've played some team sports, I've never had an interest in watching any of them. If I'm likely to watch or follow any sport, they have always been singles events - one person facing another when there is a clear outcome of one person's skill over another...on the day.

I agree totally, I've never had an interest in ANY sports and can't understand why people get so het up over what is, after all, just a game.

Hi Rainbow !
Last I looked, I can confirm that I am a man.
However, despite that handicap I am constantly amazed at the rugby (and any any other sport) obsession, that grips the mainly male world almost on a global scale.
Perhaps it is a throwback to the ancient tribal instinct - to smash our next door neigbor tribe's heads in - just because they wear the bones through their noses the wrong way?
Still, I must say, it is much better that the primitive ancient male agression is released in a rugby arena than on the killing fields of war.

Thanks Hartmut!! I always love the wisdom you portray on our Cafe Chat discussions!! You have a way of looking at things that no one else does. Something tells me you've been here before... :)

Hi Rainbow,
Thank you for your kind comment.
Re: 'Something tells me you've been here before...:-) '
I think we all have been here before; there are even some who say, we, as a Soul Energy, could have started off very slow, say as a plant or an animal, and then work / evolve our eternal way upwards.
If so, then there must be a maltitude of different soul-levels here on Earth, which also may explain some of our global conflicts.
Be well, Cheerio, Hartmut :-)

I DON'T have Rugby World Cup Fever!!!! NOR AM I INTERESTED IN RUGBY UNION.
Its such a pity that you ignore both the NRL and AFL Finals series that are currently underway.
While I don't support Rugby League I find it an irony that you ignore both the NRL and the AFL during their finals series.
Obviously an ignorant Kiwi who designed this question

Hi Rainbow,
Thank you for your message,Glad to know your an Aussie:)
But as I say its a real feast of winter sports finals on now, Rugby, Rugby League and AFL
Yes being a Victorian I was brought up on it and derive much enjoyment from it.
However, thinking about the question you put, It could have been framed to include the fact that ALL such finals are being played now...Not often that happens is it!.
Take care, Have a nice weekend.

Hi telperion, thank you for your comments.

For the record, I am an Australian living in Sydney, not an ignorant Kiwi as you so nicely put it. I posed the question regarding the Rugby World Cup because it is of interest to me and I didn't feel the need to include every code of football currently being played. The RWC is a WORLD event happening once every 4 years, so I felt this was something of interest to discuss with the Cafestudy members.

I'm pleased you get so much joy out of AFL, I'm sure your chosen team would be so pleased to have you as a supporter.

All the best, Rainbow

Yes Hartmut I am exercising my right to my opinion as much as you have.
As for your suggestion of going to You Tube, I wont take up your offer.
I resent the fact you consider my comments as...

Calling someone ignorant, merely for stating an opinion, or who is not so obsessed to know all about the ins and outs about rugby ,- IS abusive.
And don't wish me a nice day, when you do not mean it.

Its so unfortunate that the person writing this column and sought opinions on this topic, also chose to ignore the fact that two other sporting codes are playing in there final series.
You will also see other responding also support the AFL like I do.
Have a nice day!

Doesn't everybody? (except those boneheads who think their minority codes of AFL & NRL are the centre of the universe}

As for Australia winning, after the debacle against Ireland they would be a 25-1 chance at best.

Yes Lusthaven I am proud to be a bonehead AFL fan which is a game with a growing international following.
Did you know Australia's own game is even played in Russia and yes its been played in NZ on the South Island Gold fields 2 centuries ago and is played in that country today.
So our minority code is not the centre of the world but playing its part

Nor do I like rugby. Its rough and violent and not the game I would be interested in following. Soccor is much better because there is no tackling and less likely of receiving injuries.

Go Corinne I feel exactly the same as you do. It is so good to see NZers being openly patriotic and openhearted to all the overseas visitors and be proud of litle NZ doing such a great job of hosting this event

Yes ree, It's going to be an interesting Grand Final, I hope the cup stays here in Australia. We'll be watching, my husband is estatic that Manly got thru.(If you hear a grow man crying you'll know they lost). :(

I don't like rugby either, but I have a work friend who was beside herself with worry for her beloved team "Storm" as she says they always lose to the New Zealand team they were up against tonight. She, as does her whole family love Storm very very much and don't miss any games. I can't be that into sport.

Rugby is a good game but the early stages of the World cup are a tendency to be cluttered with mediocre games. So that you don’t suffer from overload, reserve your viewing time for the quarters,...

I'm with you there, can't see the sense of running up and back down the rugby field. It seems to me that all rugby players think they are above the law, which is understandable considering they get away with so much because the penalties for unrully and vicious behaviour is nothing short of rediculous.

i used to love rugby league but when the Sper League came into it, i hated it after that, its all about money for these boys now. bring back the days when players played for the love of their club and put their heart and soul into the game and maybe i might watch it again. players do their best now because they want their million dollars a year. when i was a kid, players did their best because they loved their club and wanted them to win
