2020 really isn't that far away.

I am noticing a lot more multi-story buildings being made with the ground floor being used for shops/retail/professional purposes and just apartment/units in the upper levels. Also, land/block sizes are shrinking at an alarming rate. I would love to see minimum block sizes of 550m2 or so. I understand that more and more people are having to work longer hours or 2 or more jobs just to make ends meet these days, but maybe that's the root of the problem... maybe we're not happy to live within our means anymore?

Hi Jane, according to the greens we'll all be living in caves again and will be hunters and gatherers. Seriously thou, I do not think that a great deal will change in the next 10 years as we do not have the resources to change what we have done so far. We are already able to construct complete houses in factories and transport them on site in small fully assembled sections. High-rise buildings are being built by this method as we blog to each other. The spread of Urbanism will continue but we will become more and more reliant on multi storey building. Hopefully our town planners will incorporate parks, public transport and dwelling designs that suit the demographics.
In the USA there is a trial under-way to build roads and footpaths using photo voltaic cells that function similar to what's on your roof. the added advantage is that the cells can be programmed to act as lights, directional signals or guidance for cars travelling on these roads. It would be such a wonderful thing to have and hopefully would not impact on the environment.

More adapted to renewable resources including energy saving lights, stoves, etc. Simple but professional as culture adapts to a lifestyle of change.
