I believe the brochures explaining the carbon tax to us will soon be in the mail. I got an email today from a like minded friend suggesting what I should do with the brochure and I agree whole heartedly. I AM GOING TO RETURN IT TO THE SENDER ie THE PM HERSELF. I hope many of you do the same, that way she just may get the message - WE DONT WANT NOR NEED A TAX ON CARBON.

Sorry CAT17 you can't speak for me. I believe Australia does need a carbon tax until we get an emissions trading policy in 3 years time. We are among the highest polluters in the world, logic says that the earth's system is being damaged by human activity particularly since the industrial revolution and we live extravagant lives which are centred on the use of resources and the use of energy. Many of the industries which are the heaviest polluters will not change their ways until their hip pocket is hurt. Once the carbon tax comes in we will see them look for ways of not producing so great a carbon emission output. Sure in the meantime they will pass their costs on to us but this will not be too heavy a burden for us when it is spread around. We are going to be recompensed by the government and ultimately the big polluters will develop cleaner energy sources/ cleaner production methods. We do need a tax on carbon and many of us actually want one for the sake of our grandchildren and the planet. Why so much ugly anger? Why aren't you angry about the damage we have done to our planet?

Hi cat17, I for one am all for solar power, irrespective of the argument for or against the carbon tax. Just consider the fact that we are running out of fossil fulels, the planet cannot keep up with the demand and the costs to consumers is skyrocketing. Electricity prices in Tasmania have risen 75 % in 5 years. The sooner we all can get our own solar panels the better, and at least be partially self sufficient.Even one solar panel and a $300 deep cycle battery can supply lights, TV,computer, mobile phone-charger radio, dvds, cds, you'd be surprised, and add extras yearly, soon you'd be self sufficient. Wind power technology is improving too, getting less noisy. People can design their own small cylinder types for the suburban garden, more bird -friendly. Another thing about rising carbon dioxide levels is that it means that if the proportion of carbon dioxide riser, then the% of oxygen is lowered accordingly, this is said to be getting to a critical level for our health and many authorities cite this, along with other factors, as being a root cause of many illnesses and diseases including the steady rise cancer cases.. (one successful treatment is use of a oxygen chamber -hyperbaric chamber) . It's true that volcanoes are a constant problem , we cannot yet "cork" a volcano, but we do have the means to clean up our own backyard and lead by example, that may lead to others following suit, thereby making enough difference to effect a rise in the oxygen level. Trees make oxygen and therein lies another issue - logging! As for politics, no one ever has the "Whole Answer" -one can ever only tackle one thing at a time.Julia has a really difficult job to do. I believe she is doing her best ( as a brave woman in a mainly male dominating world) Whether her policies will succeed is yet to be seen. I have every hope that they will, as our future here on Planet Earth depends largely on the advice of scientists, and the politicians taking notice, even if it seems to be too late to make much difference. I sincerely hope its not.....Cheers-Simla

Per capita we are the biggest polluters. Study after study verifies this. This means individually we create more pollution, (3 times as much) than someone in China or India. How can we expect those countries to reduce their pollution while we, per capita, are disgraceful creators of pollution. And how on earth can you claim that Julia Gillard and Bob Brown don't care about your grandchildren? How can you be so sure of their motives!!!

I would love to know where the proof is that we in Australia are big polluters? Has anyone stopped and thought of just how sparsley populated this country actually is. How can we possibly be the biggest in the world when we have open empty spaces that have no "polluting" machinery, people or anything else . I would much rather put my grandchildren's future in the hands of the Creator. Julia Gillard and Bob Brown dont know my grandies and I am sure they aren't thinking about them or your children when they are pushing for this tax.
Green energy is only going to help and make plenty of money for the manufacturers of the wind turbines and the solar panels and is going to cost most of us a fortune. Do you really think that having hundreds, probably thousands (to power this huge continent) is going to be good for the enviroment? Have you ever stood by one and listened to the hum? Wait until you have hundreds everywhere - I have experienced standing near only a few and I can tell you it is not going to be somethung you would want to live too near. Julia Gillard and her "reforms" policies are killing us and changing Australia into a place that is no longer the "lucky country".

Hi thanks to those who sent the brochure back from whence it came! If we as Australian tax payers dont voice our displeasure at the woeful way thus government is once again going against most Australians then I guess we deserve what we get. This is a government that is just hanging on o power and yet still make decisions that are not bebefitting us. The planet is NOT going to benefit from us paying a tax - it is being pushed by the Greens and Julia has to follow suit. I accept the comments of those who dont agree with me, but please do your own research regarding carbon (which is not a pollution at all) and then make your wishes heard. In the mean time please continue to "return to sender"!

How do you cap a Volcano?

Vulcanologists around the world are waiting your response.

RIGHT ON Lyle! You must have been reading the same research info as I have. Politicians and carbon taxes arent going to do a thing for the planet. In fact this planet is pretty good and clearing up man's mess and I am sure Nature will take care of the earth again. Why dont people do the research themselves instead of believing in politicians who only listen to the "info" they want so they can put into place their tax and policies. We were told not so long ago that the rivers would never run again and the reservoirs would never fill!! Well that expert was wrong (think his name is Jim something!) but the government listened to him and bought back a whole of water at millions of dollars They just wasted a lot of money that could have been spent on really imoortant things,

Love to hear your ideas on reducing carbon emissions ..shall I hold my breath?.

Dont believe all you hear from politicians. It is a very politically driven subject. Just too much HOT Air from our PM who has to appease the greens.

Breathe easy Sammbo, the air is clean and fresh here on OZ.

Why even mention that carbon is not pollution. You know perfectly well what the ¨Carbon Tax¨means ' it is based on the fact that there is an excessive amount of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere. The proportion of carbon dioxide is increasing all the time and beyond the natural blance. This does have a negative effect which cannpt be denied whether you call it carbon or carbon dioxide.

First - Try stopping just one volcano from erupting and putting more carbon into the atmosphere in just one day than the total combined last 5 years worth of Australia's effort of reduction.
Secondly Carbon is not a pollutant but a much needed gas for plants to grow.
Thirdly, Why are cheap energy producers in Australia who create employment and benefits suddenly being made out as social criminals? That includes the electricity you are using to write your comments.
Fourthly, A tax is a tax and not a solution to deal with any potential damage caused by wild weather.
These are facts not fiction.

I have received my taxpayer-funded government advertising material for the Carbon Tax. I intend to return it to:
Prime Minister Julia Gillard
PO Box 6022
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600
marked "NO THANKS I don't want the Carbon Tax that you promised NOT to give us. I want another election immediately. Your crucial support came from a politician who stated that no-one in the current government should claim a mandate to do anything."

Couldn't agree more with you errolsyd, I also had a few things to say regarding boat people, the ridiculous cost associated with them, such as the so called Malaysian deal, my hopes for gay marriage, labor party policies in general, but as you say, nothing will get through their heads. I have not received a reply to my email either, although it has been read ( I requested a read receipt when I sent it ).
All I can say is that at least some of us are having a say, even if it falls on deaf ears.

Who is WE?

No one can, nor should speak for all.

We may not like the tax, but if we do nothing, and wait for others to start
first in doing something about reducing carbon first, we may wait forever - while the opitions to stop climate changing getting fewer and fewer, and the future cost of stopping it - will get higher and higer.
WE must think LONGTERM not in mini-short term.
