My kids have wanted the strangest mixtures of topping on toast. Like peanut buttter, vegemite, jam and honey all spread together on one slice. Has anyone else had strange requests from their kids?

i babysit a lot and get the strangest requests. I've gotten the request for:
Plain tomato sauce
Toast with honey and vegemite
Plain lemon juice in a cup
Completely dry toast with raw broccoli on the side (that was a funny kid... but weird too...)

My younger brother has minced garlic, honey and devon roll on a sandwich or peanut butter and tomato sauce, not the nicest mixture.

My brother would make sandwiches with cheese, peanut butter, vegemite and cracked pepper. He also isisted it tasted better if zapped in the microwave rather than toasted.

Banana and sugar with vegemite on bread or toast.
We were also embarrassed when we visited an elderly lady in a retirement village who had managed to cook us a delicious hot lunch. including dessert. Miss 2 year spotted bananas refused to eat what was cooked and politely asked for banana on bread - it was her latest craze. Luckily the lady was understanding, laughed and gladly obliged. She laughed when she told her friends about it. We didn't think it was funny though.

I don't think it is just children. I love peanut butter, cream cheese and marmite together. I have just made my son peanut butter and cheddar cheese sandwiches to take to school today! My other son loves cheese and jam sandwiches.... I think some of us have savoury taste buds, some sweet and some are just darn right muddled!! LOL x

Usually children eat what there body needs. So if they don't have enough salt, they will eat vegemite etc. I have to admit that peanut butter and honey is really nice though.

No as I don't have any young kids but here is one that I like and they might to. I am a 61 year old Yank and I just love vegemite, peanut butter, sliced green olives and cheddar cheese sandwitch. Also I love vegemite that much I use it as a potato chip dip by mixing it with sour cream and lots of it I may add. Yummy.

We are so used to how things are done that we don't experiment anymore, great to see the kids getting creative. Maybe they might stumble across the next taste sensation. My 4 year olds favorite on toast is peanut butter with nutella and he loves to dip cheese in sauce or mayonaise.

My favourite toppings on toast when I was a child and even still now is vegimite, honey and cheese. My daughter's is peanut butter, honey and banana so maybe it runs in the family. My father has anything thats left over and needs using up, I've seen him eating jam, kiwi fruit and pasta on toast in the morning but I think that's going a bit too far.

My Miss (almost) 3yo has asked for ice-cream and weet-bix; as well, she's tried cheese & chocolate (washed down with milk!?!). I figure let her go. I think its all a part of allowing their imaginations loose. Who says they're wrong & we're right anyway. Isn't it all a matter of taste ;-)

Hi bydesign! I agree with you, it is all about personal tastes and in fact if a child asks for a particular "mixture" on their toast, sandwich etc, let them have it. Children's taste buds are immature and what we think is "yuck"" they just love. I think it is much better to go along with the child's choice than make an issue out of it which can lead to other "eating problems" My eldest daughter took cheese and sweet mustard pickles sandwiches to school every day for years and even though I was worried at first that she would be bored, I gave up and let her have it every day. Even when she was old enough to make her own sandwich she still had the same topping. Jam and tasty cheese was one of my favourites when I was a child and I must admit I am still partial to it!!

i think that a lot of people have preconceived ideas about what foods should go with what and maybe you should try it before you knock it! my mother in law is very ewww against eating any leftovers for breakfast from the night before because in her mind you are supposed to have cereal or toast. but for us being bakers we have been up all night working so coming home and eating leftovers at breakfast time is about normal!

One of my sons used to have a sandwich like this when he was a teenager. He's now in his 40's. His had cheese on it as well.
He used to call it a Kamakazee sanger.

I have never heard of all the spreads together on one slice, sounds yukky. However, as a child I had peanut butter and honey, vegemite alone, jam and peanut butter. I would set a limit to two toppings. Introduce cinnamon and apple and other tasty toppings. Chopped up ham and cheese under the griller is an old favourite and is filling.

The things you've listed all sound yummy - some of the others sure don't. But we're allowed to be different, I guess!

Our little boy made us laugh today, he wanted sauce with his Nutra Grain, so we put a little bit on the side of his bowl and he would take one at a time and dipped it in and loved it. He didn't screw his face once....

Hi Chrissy,
I couldn't help but notice this one of yours. Have your kids been looking at some of these recipes in here? If so, they may have discovered my. . . Shit on Toast Recipe. (Sorry about that!!)
IF you find the recipe in here, somewhere, it has the whole story about how I came to think of it, but I won't go into it here. To clarify, My version uses MARMITE and Crunchy Peanut Butter, henc the term . . . On Toast. I just LOVE Vegemite, which is why I chose MARMITE as the major ingredient.
It sounds gross, but its a "Fun" thing for kids to play around with. A bit cheeky, though. Sorry about that!
What am I saying? It probably IMPROVES the taste of Marmite!
