Defensive driving courses

Do you think that a mandatory defensive driving course should be undertaken before anyone is issued a drivers licence?
When I was a young driver, a police officer friend of the family suggested that such a course would be beneficial to anyone who drives. I took the course and have always been grateful for doing so, to the extent that I insisted my children do so before being able to drive the family car.
The main lesson I have remembered, is to drive as if all other drivers are going to do the unexpected at any time.
I still advocate that such a course may go some way to reducing the road toll.
A refresher course should also be done before any suspended driver has their licence reinstated.
I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

Though I never did one I wish I had I think not only would it be good education it would also be fun. After all all the different strategies for lowering the road toll aren’t working and finding people isn’t working maybe doing more driver training might help
