Given Sydney has the worse public transport system of any first world city practically,, as reported in a global report, hidden by our NSW PM at the time, Iemma, a car is essential in Sydney. So called peak hour services between Sydney and Wollongong where many commute to work from are only once an hour and suffer frequent delays, derailments, weather interruptions (flooding, buckled tracks, even suicides). The NSW and Sydney public transport system is a mess and gets worse as you go out to the periphery. That is why many people pay top dollar to live in the city and why many people drive everywhere even at night. Usually the last trains even on weekend are 12 or 1 pm. Taxis are the most expensive in the world and so are not an option nor is walking due to safety in the city or suburbs at night
